Of course you need to bring reading material and activities. Snacks are a must for some. Maybe you prefer your own headphones. Here's some other things you might like to have, especially on long trips.
At the bottom of the list, find 2 items you never thought of and will never again travel without.
A power strip! In the terminal, if you get access to a single socket you can charge all your devices and even share with others. On the flight, if the socket is under the seat, you'll love having the plug closer to you, easily accessable, for yourself and others.

Bring your own empty water bottle or sippy cup, and fill it once you're inside security. This could be a durable or a disposable item. Bottles are good especially on long flights so you can have plenty of water convenient for yourself. Cups with lids are more spill-proof than the open cups they give with drink service.

Fold-flat bins to open under the seat in front of you. Creates drawer storage space and items won't get away from you.

Extra bags. Bring an empty nylon bag so when you deplane you have an extra bag to collect all your stuff in, instead of trying to cram it back into the carryon you came on with. Bring an empty disposable grocery bag to collect your trash.

MY FAVORITE original items to bring with me on flights:
A pillowcase or stuff-sack. When travelling in winter, get on the plane and put your gloves, scarf, and coat into the pillowcase so they won't get lost and you'll have a terriffic pillow for the flight.

A 15-inch beachball. You'll thank me!
-Inflate it a little for lumbar support.
-Inflate it a little more for a pillow (window seat sleepers!)
-Inflate it a lot and put it on your tray table to sleep leaning forward.
-Inflate it in a secluded section of the terminal and let your kids run wild with it.
Check out this globe beach ball. On theme for travelling.
